  Network and Computer Usage POLICY

All Member Libraries of the Butler County Federated Library System have computers available for public use. All of them have high speed access to the internet. Additionally, all have Microsoft Office applications which include Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Publisher.
Please read this policy thoroughly, as your computer privileges can be suspended
if you do not abide by the following:
 Cybrarian Policy
  • You must have a valid library card with the Butler County Federated Library System (BCFLS) unless you are from outside Butler County.
    • Out of town users MUST show ID and will be issued a guest card.
  • The start up screen on the computers will ask for your library barcode (found on the back of your library card). Check the box on the screen to see the numbers as you type. Type your barcode without any spaces between numbers.
  • In order to print, you must have money on the card to cover the cost of the pages you will be printing. Any amount of money can be added at any time at the Reference Desk. After choosing to print a document, Cybrarian will show you how much is being deducted from your card and how much money is left on the card.
  • If you lose your library card and still had money on it, please visit the Reference Staff before applying for a new card. If not, we will not be able to determine the amount of money remaining on your library card.
  • Your library card will allow you access to any of the computers in BCFLS. However, money added to your card at one library will not be accessible from another library.
  • AT THE END OF YOUR SESSION, it is very important that you LOG OUT. We are not responsible for money or time you lose if you forget to log out.
General Policies - May vary by location, check with your location for detailed policy information.
  • This policy covers the use of the computers with Internet and word processing access, which are available for public use.
  • Computer sessions are limited to 90 minutes. If there is no one waiting in the schedule to use the computer, an automatic extension will be given for up to 30 minutes. A maximum of 150 minutes per day will be issued to all patrons. If you need to be online uninterrupted for more than 90 minutes, please see staff. We do have one computer available for test taking, online applications and special projects, which must be reserved in advance.
  • The use of all computers will conclude 10 minutes prior to the closing of the Library.
  • Patrons are not permitted to run their own software or install any software on any computer.
  • Patrons may not change settings that impact usage of the computers for others. Leaving the computer in an unusable state is grounds for suspension of privileges.
  • Library staff is available to provide you with a brief orientation to the computers and Cybrarian use: however, due to limited staff time, we cannot walk you through your project! Patrons are expected to be familiar with Windows, basic Microsoft application knowledge, basic typing skills and basic internet skills. Library staff is neither available nor able to provide you with assistance in these areas.
  • The Library reserves the right to cancel or interrupt use of the computers at any time.
  • Patron confidentiality will be protected to the best of our ability.
  • Patrons under 12 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian while using the computers.
  • Patrons may access material save to a diskette. Patrons are only permitted to download or upload files to the internet or to a diskette.
  • Patrons are responsible for the material downloaded or uploaded.
  • While you may access your electronic mail through a third party system, our computers are not able to receive your mail directly.
  • Anyone under the age of 18 is not permitted to access sites which contain or make reference to explicit sexual materials as defined in 18PA C.S. 5903 (relating to obscene and other sexual materials and performances).
  • As ruled by the Supreme Court, all of our public access computers have an internet filter which will block material designated for patrons over the age of 18. Filters may be disabled for patrons over 18 by Library staff. Adult X-rated material is currently NOT ALLOWED due to the fact that we cannot prevent minors from viewing the material on all computer screens.
Printing Charges for Internet and Word Processing
Agreement
  • All computer users agree to follow all regulations stated in this policy. All users agree to take proper care of equipment and to pay any applicable replacement costs of equipment that has been damaged due to their carelessness or negligence in reporting malfunctions to Library staff. Failure to abide by this policy may result in suspension of future computer privileges.
